6 Simple Ways You Can Start Living a Healthier Life Today

What does it mean to live a healthy life?

Living healthy is living in a state of overall wellness. It’s choosing to place self-care as a personal priority, and let’s face it, good health is often the foundation to well-being and happiness.

To some, the thought of making a bunch of lifestyle changes can seem terribly overwhelming.

I get it.

If you fall into that category, know that you aren’t alone, and that getting healthy can start with a few simple actions. Tackle these until they become habits. Then slowly add more healthy choices to your life, like drinking more water and eating more vegetables. 🙂

Here are 6 simple ways you can start living a healthier life today:

1. Be mindful of your eating habits by making each meal pleasurable, satiating, and nourishing.

Pleasurable: Take the time to prepare your meal with love and a positive attitude. Smell the aroma. Invite good company to join you. Experiment with new foods, different seasonings, change your cooking method, or try a new recipe to keep things interesting and to avoid boredom. Arrange it on the plate in a fun, fancy way. Have fun with this! Take a picture and share it on your favorite social media platform. Be proud of your creation and thoroughly enjoy every bite.

Satiating: Don’t be afraid of a little bit of fat. Healthy fats like olive oil, avocado oil, grass-fed butter, or coconut oil can make a meal taste so delicious and satisfying. Don’t deprive your body of high quality, whole foods for the sake of reducing calories. This will only lead to hunger and binging later. When you eat, take your time. Chew slowly. Try to get the food to near liquid in your mouth before you swallow. This is very beneficial for healthy digestion.

Nourishing: Be aware of how your body responds to the food you eat, and honor your body by avoiding what doesn’t agree with it. If you eat something and then immediately have a reaction to it, like it flushes right through you, or you have gas and bloating, it’s not a food that agrees with your body, so avoid it in the future or try a different method of preparation. For example: soaking your beans before you cook them. Our body is incredibly intelligent and it sends signals when something is causing it to work much harder.

2. Focus on improving your relationships through gratitude, forgiveness, communication, and praise.

Gratitude: Keep a gratitude journal as a daily reminder of how grateful you are for the good gifts and people in your life.

Forgiveness: Who are you on bad terms with? Is it really worth continuing the fight? Take action to begin forgiving others and put that negativity behind you.

Communication: Do your best to communicate well with the people in your life, especially your spouse, children, co-workers, and friends. Reach out to them regularly to let them know you care. It feels good to love others and it will help keep those relationships on good terms.

Praise: Avoid pouring all of your attention into what’s going wrong in your relationships and instead, praise all that is wonderful and good. From there, you can take action to improve areas of weakness in your relationships in a positive and healthy manner.

3. Practice healthier hygiene for benefits other than just cleanliness.

Increase circulation: Scrub your entire body with a hot, damp washcloth every morning or evening. Do this separate from your shower or bath. Stand by your bathroom sink to do this. Or, if you prefer, use a dry brush to brush your skin in upward or downward motions toward your heart.

Allow your skin to breathe: Wear 100% cotton as much as possible, avoiding synthetic fabrics/clothing.

Use “clean” hygiene products: Gradually start switching over to more naturally derived beauty and personal hygiene products. is an excellent resource to check the “healthy” rating of the products you’re currently using or are considering purchasing.

4. Choose and practice having a positive attitude in all things.

Allow yourself to giggle: Relax your face. Laugh a little. No need to be so serious all the time. Life is what you make of it, so enjoy it!

Give thanks: Take time to reflect upon all that you have to be thankful for and say a prayer of gratitude each day.

Enjoy life: Make time for the things you love to do. Turn on your favorite tunes and sing along. Have a dance party. Get together with friends. Just have fun!

Work through your negative emotions: We all have bad things in life that happen to us. Whatever it is that causes you to react in an emotionally negative state, work through it, journal about it, talk to a therapist if you need to. It’s so important to cope with those feelings in a healthy and productive way, so you can put them behind you and experience truly authentic positivity.

Create an environment of beauty around yourself: Enjoy the healthy lifestyle changes you’re making. Diffuse essential oils in your home and take in the aroma. Plant an herb garden on your patio or a vegetable garden in the back yard. Enjoy fresh cut, seasonal flowers in a pretty vase on a nearby table. Cook homemade foods in your kitchen and invite a family member to join you.

5. Get your body moving, but allow time for rest as well.

Try a new method of exercise: Exercise should be fun and not feel like an obligation. Try a few different types of workouts and see what you enjoy the most. Some people prefer running, others like to get together with a friend to walk and talk. You can try a martial arts style kickboxing class, or even sign up for karate or taekwondo. Maybe you prefer yoga. There’s no right or wrong answer. The best answer is whatever brings you the most joy, because that’s what will keep you moving your body consistently going forward.

Carve out time for rest: Sleep is vital to optimal health. This should be a non-negotiable lifestyle habit. Strive for 8 hours sleep each night and if you don’t get 8 hours, plan for a quick nap during the day, if possible. Your body is in detoxification and repair mode while you sleep. Let it do its thing to keep you healthy.

6. Create a healthy home environment.

Increase oxygen in the air: Add a beautiful, green plant to each room, and to the office in your home. Open windows periodically to let fresh air flow through your home. Open your blinds or curtains to let the sun shine through.

Keep a clean home: Hire a housekeeper or schedule time each week to clean your home yourself. Keep each room tidy and organized. A clean, uncluttered home reduces personal stress, allows for better relaxation, and helps you to set your best foot forward each day when you leave the house.

Limit technology time: Be sure to keep a reasonable distance from your tech when you’re using it to limit your exposure to EMF’s (electromagnetic fields). Also limit time spent in social media so you don’t find yourself unnecessarily stressed out, caught in a comparison trap, or angry over something a “friend” may have posted.
